The Bear and the Bull

Marcus stood in line at the county fair, clutching his orange soda like it was his last lifeline to coolness. The condensation slicked his palm, matching the nervous sweat gathering at his hairline. Behind him, Jenna laughed at something Tyler said—that specific, tinkling laugh that made Marcus's stomach do backflips.

"You gonna ride that mechanical bull or just stare at it all night?" Tyler jeered, loud enough for the whole group to hear. "Because I heard last week's ride time was, like, twelve seconds. Straight to the dirt."

The group hooted. Jenna didn't.

Marcus's face burned. He'd never admit he'd never touched a mechanical bull in his life, let alone ridden one. But somewhere between Tyler's smirk and Jenna's sympathetic glance, something shifted in his chest. That hot, bull-headed streak his mom always complained about flared up like a match in dry grass.

"Watch this," Marcus said, handing Jenna his soda. "Hold this."

He marched to the ticket booth before his brain could process what his mouth had promised. The operator—some dude with greasy hair and eyes that said he'd seen a thousand scared teenagers—grinned, showing teeth that had seen better decades.

"First time?" the guy drawled. "Don't grip with your thighs. Grip with your knees. And whatever you do, don't fight it. Flow with it."

Marcus nodded, trying to look chill while his heart hammered against his ribs like a trapped bird. He climbed onto the bull's fake leather back, wrapped his hand in the rope, and gave a thumbs up he definitely didn't feel.

The bull lurched. Marcus jerked, his body fighting the motion. Clockwise, counterclockwise, a sudden spin that nearly sent him flying. His grip tightened until his knuckles turned white. Somewhere in the spinning chaos, he heard his friends yelling—maybe cheering, maybe laughing, he couldn't tell anymore.

Then everything clicked. His knees locked, his hips loosened, and suddenly he was moving with the bull instead of against it. Time stretched weird and thick. He saw Jenna's face, wide-eyed and impressed, holding his orange soda high like some kind of victory trophy. Tyler's jaw had actually dropped.

The bull bucked harder. Marcus rode it out, feeling powerful and terrified and completely alive all at once.

*SEVEN POINT TWO SECONDS!* the announcer boomed.

Marcus tumbled into the padding, breathless and dizzy. His friends rushed over, slapping his back, Jenna's smile brighter than the fair lights. Tyler actually looked impressed.

But then the PA system crackled, and the announcer's voice cut through the celebration: *"And now, folks, get ready for our special midnight event—BEAR WRESTLING!"*

A hush fell over the crowd. A massive man in a stained tank top led an actual, live black bear on a chain toward the ring. Parents grabbed their kids. The fair's magic shattered into something ugly and wrong.

Marcus turned to Jenna, expecting her to look as horrified as he felt.

But Jenna was already walking away, orange soda still in hand. She turned back, eyes flashing. "You coming? Because I'm not supporting that crap."

Marcus scrambled up off the padding, his bull-riding victory suddenly feeling very small. He jogged after her, leaving Tyler and the rest of the group behind.

"Yeah," he said, falling into step beside her. "Yeah, I'm coming."

The night air was cool. His hand brushed hers, and she didn't pull away. Some victories were way better than seven seconds on a mechanical bull.
