The Baseball Who Came to Play
Lily sat alone in her backyard, tossing her baseball up and down. Up, down, up, down. The summer sun warmed her face, but her heart felt lonely. All the other kids were away at camp.
Suddenly, the baseball stopped in mid-air.
Lily gasped. The shiny white ball with red stitches hovered right in front of her nose, then floated toward the garden fence. Curious, she followed.
Behind the fence, something strange happened. The baseball began to glow soft pink, then purple, then golden yellow. It pulsed like a tiny heartbeat.
"I've been spying on you," said a small squeaky voice.
Lily looked around. No one was there.
"Down here! It's me—your baseball!"
The ball spun in a joyful circle. "I'm from the Star Realm, where balls can think and feel. My job is to be a friendship spy—I search for children who need magical friends."
Lily's eyes widened. "You're my spy?"
"Your friendship spy!" the baseball corrected cheerfully. "And now that I found you, I can show you something wonderful."
The ball floated higher. "Throw me! But imagine something wonderful first."
Lily closed her eyes. She imagined flying through clouds, touching stars, tasting cotton candy sunsets.
She threw the ball with all her might.
WHOOSH!
The ball didn't come down. Instead, it turned into a shimmering silver path stretching up into the sky. Sparkling stairs appeared.
"Climb!" the baseball called. "Adventure awaits!"
Lily climbed higher and higher, past birds and butterflies, until she reached a magical kingdom where balls of all kinds played together—basketballs dancing, soccer balls singing, tennis balls painting rainbows.
For one perfect afternoon, Lily played magical games with her new friend. They laughed until their sides hurt, caught stars like fireflies, and made friends with a bouncy basketball named Bloop.
When the sun began to set, the baseball flew Lily home.
"Will you visit again?" Lily asked.
"Every summer day," promised her new best friend. "That's what friendship spies do—we find friends, then we keep them forever."
That night, Lily fell asleep with her baseball glowing gently on her nightstand, dreaming of tomorrow's adventures. She wasn't lonely anymore. Sometimes the best friends come in the most surprising packages.
