The Baseball That Opened the Sea

Lily loved her red baseball more than anything in the world. She'd drawn tiny stars all over it with silver marker, and she swore it sparkled in the sunlight.

One hot afternoon, Lily and her best friend Mateo went swimming at Crystal Lake. But just as Lily waded into the cool blue water, disaster struck—her precious baseball slipped from her fingers and sank like a stone.

"No!" Lily cried, diving after it.

But the baseball kept sinking deeper, deeper, glowing faintly as it descended. Lily and Mateo followed, amazed that they could swim so far down without needing to breathe.

At the bottom of the lake sat something incredible—a golden pyramid covered in shimmering scales like fish. Lily's baseball floated toward its tip, then clicked perfectly into a small star-shaped opening.

The pyramid's sides unfolded like a flower, revealing a friendly mermaid with turquoise hair.

"Thank you!" she bubbled happily. "I've been trapped in there for a hundred years! That magical baseball was the only key that could set me free!"

The mermaid introduced herself as Coral, and she had magical powers. She granted Lily and Mateo one wish each.

Lily thought hard. "I wish..." she smiled at Mateo, "...that every kid in the world could have a best friend to swim with."

Coral clapped her hands delightedly. "A wonderful wish!"

Suddenly, Lily and Mateo found themselves back on the beach, dripping wet but grinning. Lily's baseball bobbed gently in the shallows, now covered in tiny real stars that glowed.

"It's even better than before," Mateo said.

Lily nodded, hugging her friend. Some things, she realized, were more magical than any treasure—like friendship, kindness, and a summer day spent swimming in wonder.
