The Baseball That Could Fly

Ten-year-old Maya loved baseball more than anything. Every afternoon, she'd grab her worn glove and run to the park where her friends waited. But Maya had a secret—she was terrified to pitch in real games. Her hands would shake like leaves in a storm.

One sunny day, while running beneath the swaying palm trees near the diamond, Maya spotted something amazing. A golden baseball shimmered in the grass beside home plate. When she scooped it up and held it in her small palm, the ball began to glow warmly.

"Throw me," a tiny voice giggled from inside the ball.

Maya almost dropped it. "You can talk?"

"I can do much more," the baseball said proudly. "I help kids find their courage. But you must be running toward what scares you, not away from it."

The championship game arrived that Saturday. Maya's team, the Starfires, was losing by three runs. Bases loaded. Two outs. Coach looked straight at Maya.

"Maya! You're pitching!"

Her heart raced like a drum. But then she remembered the magical baseball's words. Gripping it tight, Maya ran toward the mound. Faster and faster, her feet pounding the dirt. As she ran, she felt lighter than air, as if the palm trees were lifting her up.

Maya's palm tingled with the ball's magic warmth. With a mighty running leap, she wound up and threw the most spectacular pitch anyone had ever seen—a ball that left a rainbow trail across the sky!

SWISH! The batter swung and missed.

Strike three! The Starfires cheered so loudly that birds flew from the trees. Her teammates rushed the mound, hoisting Maya onto their shoulders.

That evening, the magical baseball disappeared. But the real magic stayed inside Maya forever. Now whenever she stands on the pitcher's mound, she holds her head high, remembers her golden friend, and knows she's braver than she ever imagined.
