The Baseball Sphinx Riddle

Lily loved summer evenings in her backyard, especially when her golden retriever Barnaby chased fireflies. But tonight was special – Grandpa had given her an old baseball, smooth as a river stone.

She wound up and threw with all her might. The baseball sailed high... and straight through Mrs. Kettleworth's garden fence. A sphinx statue sat among the roses, something ancient and mysterious.

CRACK!

The baseball struck the sphinx's stone paw. And suddenly – impossibly – the sphinx blinked.

"You woke me," said the sphinx, her voice like chimes in the wind. Her stone fur turned warm gold, her wings shimmered like opals. "For that, you must answer my riddle, or the baseball becomes a pumpkin forever."

Lily's neighbor tabby cat, Whiskers, padded through the fence hole, tail high. The sphinx raised an eyebrow.

"A cat knows curiosity," said the sphinx. "Perhaps she will help."

From behind the oak tree lumbered a great brown bear – but not a scary one. This was Bruno, Mrs. Kettleworth's magical friend who loved honey and bedtime stories. Bruno sat like a fluffy mountain and nodded solemnly.

"Riddle me this," announced the sphinx: "I have paws but cannot walk, I bounce but have no legs, I fly through summer air but have no wings. What am I?"

Barnaby barked excitedly, circling. Whiskers purred, weaving around the sphinx's paws. Bruno scratched his head thoughtfully.

Lily gasped. "The baseball!"

"Correct!" The sphinx smiled, and silver sparkles filled the garden like fairy dust. "You have three true friends – loyal, clever, and wise. That is the greatest treasure of all."

She tapped the baseball with her claw. It transformed into a glowing crystal that could summon them all for adventures. Then the sphinx curled up and became stone again, waiting for the next curious child.

That night, Lily fell asleep dreaming of sphinx riddles and magical friends, with Barnaby snoring at her feet. And somewhere, a cat, a bear, and a sphinx smiled in their dreams.
