The Baseball Sphinx

Lily loved to play catch in her backyard. Every day after school, she'd grab her favorite baseball—a shiny white one with red stitches that sparkled in the sun. Her best friend Sam would run over, and they'd throw the ball back and forth until the stars came out.

One afternoon, Lily threw the ball higher than ever before. It soared over the fence and disappeared behind the old oak tree. Lily and Sam climbed over and discovered something they'd never noticed before: a hidden pool, its water shimmering like liquid sapphires. And floating right in the center was her baseball!

The ball began to glow. Golden light swirled around it, and suddenly—whoosh!—it grew larger and larger. Wings spread from its sides. A lion's body formed beneath. When the light faded, a magnificent sphinx sat where the baseball had been, her fur the color of sand, her eyes holding ancient secrets.

"You've found my favorite form," the sphinx purred. "I am Cleo, guardian of magical games. I've been waiting for a friend who could throw true."

Cleo taught them baseball like they'd never played before. The ball became a shooting star when hit, the bat a magic wand that made any catch possible. They played until sunset, laughing as Cleo told stories of ancient Egypt and flying over pyramids.

"But you must never spy on others' games," Cleo warned seriously. "True magic comes from friendship, not secrets."

The next day, Lily and Sam returned to find only the pool sparkling in the sunlight. But in Lily's pocket, her baseball glowed warmly, and sometimes, when they played, they could hear Cleo's gentle purr in the wind.

They learned that the best magic wasn't flying sphinxes or glowing baseballs. It was having a friend to share adventures with—and knowing that some secrets are worth keeping safe together.
