The Baseball's Secret Friend

Lily found the old baseball in her attic, hidden inside a dusty wooden chest. It sparkled strangely in the afternoon light, as if tiny stars were trapped inside its leather seams. When she picked it up, the ball felt warm, like it had been sleeping in the sun.

Her golden retriever, Buster, bounded up the attic stairs, wagging his tail so hard his whole body wiggled. He nudged the baseball with his wet nose and let out a soft woof, as if he knew something Lily didn't.

"What is it, boy?" Lily asked, scratching behind his ears.

That's when she heard it—a tiny voice coming from inside the baseball! "Hello? Is someone out there?"

Lily nearly dropped the ball. Buster barked happily, dancing in circles. The voice continued, "I've been stuck in here for seventy years! My name is Finwick, and I'm a very magical goldfish."

Lily held the baseball closer. "A goldfish? In a baseball?"

"It's a long story," the tiny voice squeaked. "I was granted three wishes by a wizard, but I used my first wish accidentally to make myself live inside the most beautiful thing I'd ever seen—this baseball from the 1950 World Series! Now I need someone to help me use my remaining wishes wisely."

Lily's eyes widened. She pulled her old iPhone from her pocket—her mom had given it to her for emergencies, but the camera still worked. "I want to remember this forever!" she said, snapping a photo of the magical baseball. The picture showed something amazing: a tiny golden fish swimming happily inside the clear ball.

Finwick's voice grew serious. "Lily, I have two wishes left, but they can only be used to help others. Will you help me choose?"

Lily thought hard. She looked at Buster, who was still wagging his tail excitedly. "I know just the thing!"

The next day, Lily carried the baseball to the park, where she'd seen a sad boy named Marco sitting alone every day. Marco's dog had run away last month, and he hadn't smiled since.

"Marco?" Lily called softly. "I have something magical to show you."

As she explained about Finwick, Marco's eyes grew wide. For the first wish, Finwick made Marco's lost dog appear—safe, happy, and carrying a baseball in his mouth! Marco cried with joy, hugging his dog tight.

For the second wish, Finwick made every child in the park receive their very own magical baseball, each containing a tiny friend who would always be there for them.

"But what about you?" Marco asked Lily. "You helped me. What do you get?"

Lily smiled, watching Buster chase his own tail happily. "I got something better than wishes. I made a new friend, and I learned that magic is real—it's just hidden in kindness."

That night, Lily took one last photo with her iPhone: Buster sleeping curled around the baseball, which now glowed softly with Finwick's magic inside. Some secrets are worth keeping, especially the ones that remind you how wonderful the world can be.
