The Baseball's Secret Flight
Ten-year-old Leo loved baseball more than anything. Every afternoon, he'd grab his favorite ball—it had a jagged seam like lightning bolt running across it—and practice pitching against the big palm tree in his backyard.
One sweltering summer day, Leo threw the ball so hard that it sailed over the fence and vanished. His neighbor, tiny Ms. Willow, called him over. "Your baseball found something special," she said with twinkling eyes.
Leo's heart was beating fast as he followed her behind her garage, where an old telephone cable lay coiled like a sleeping snake. "Watch," Ms. Willow whispered.
The baseball sat beside the cable, glowing faintly. Suddenly, lightning flashed across the sky—though no storm clouds gathered—and the cable began to shimmer like starlight. The baseball rolled toward it and disappeared INSIDE the cable!
"Where did it go?" Leo gasped.
"To the Cable Kingdom," Ms. Willow said. "It's a world between worlds, where lost things find new purpose. Want to see?"
She took his palm in hers, and suddenly Leo felt himself shrinking, smaller and smaller, until he was tiny enough to slip inside the glowing cable.
What he saw made him gasp. Inside was a whole world of lost things: marbles that rolled like planets, buttons that grew into button trees, and hundreds of baseballs playing catch with each other! His baseball was there, happier than ever.
"You can stay, or go back with me," Ms. Willow said. "But remember—sometimes losing something leads to finding something wonderful."
Leo thought about how sad he'd been when the ball disappeared, and how joyful he felt now, seeing this magical secret. He realized that losing his favorite baseball had brought him an adventure he'd never forget.
"I'll remember," Leo promised, and together they slipped back through the cable, growing big again in Ms. Willow's backyard.
That night, Leo fell asleep dreaming of lightning and cable kingdoms. He'd lost his baseball but found magic instead—and sometimes, that's even better.
