The Baseball-Playing Goldfish

Maya found the hat in her grandmother's attic. It was purple with silver stars, and when she put it on, something tingly happened. The room began to spin like a merry-go-round.

When everything stopped, Maya was tiny—no bigger than her thumb! She looked around and gasped. She was floating inside her pet goldfish's bowl!

Her goldfish, usually so quiet, swam up to her. His orange scales sparkled like tiny suns. "I'm Finbar," he bubbled. "And you're just in time for the big game!"

"What game?" Maya asked, her eyes wide.

"Papaya Baseball!" Finbar flipped his tail excitedly. "Every night, magical papayas float down from the sky. We use them as baseballs!"

Sure enough, through the glass bowl, Maya saw other fish gathering. A sparkling moonbeam hit the center of the room, and suddenly, a glowing papaya appeared! It was as big as a beach ball (to tiny Maya) and smelled like sunshine and dreams.

"I'll pitch!" said a tiny neon tetra. "Maya, you bat!"

Maya had played baseball at school, but never with a fish, never with a magical papaya, and never while wearing a twinkling hat that made her thumb-sized! Finbar handed her a seashell bat.

The papaya floated toward her. Maya swung—*CRACK!*—and the papaya burst into a thousand golden sparkles that rained down like stardust. The fish cheered!

"You're part of the team now," Finbar said, bubbling with happiness. "Every time you wear the hat, you can play with us."

The hat tingled again. Maya grew back to her normal size, sitting in the attic. But when she ran to her room, her goldfish winked at her.

Now Maya knows: the best adventures find you when you're brave enough to try something new. And sometimes, the most magical friends are the ones who've been swimming beside you all along.
