The Baseball Phone Spy
Maya clutched her iPhone like a lifeline, screen reflecting theFriday night lights of the baseball field. She'd spent the entire season hiding behind the bleachers, secretly watching Kai pitch—total lowkey spy behavior, she knew, but whatever. He was the only junior who'd ever looked twice at her.
The social pyramid at Northwood High was brutal: varsity athletes at the top, then the rich kids, then everyone else fighting for the scraps. Maya was somewhere near the bottom, floating in the water without a life raft.
"You coming to Jake's party?" Chloe asked, sliding onto the bleacher beside her. Maya's stomach did that thing where it forgot how to be an organ. Jake's house. Pool party. Maya on the list? Since when?
"Uh, I wasn't invited—" she started, but Chloe was already typing something on her phone.
"You are now. Wear that bikini from your Instagram post. Kai's gonna be there."
Maya's brain short-circuited. Kai. At a pool party. With her in a swimsuit. This was either the best night of her life or a complete disaster waiting to happen.
The game ended. Kai's team won. He jogged past the bleachers, sweat dripping down his face like he'd just walked through a waterfall. Their eyes caught for exactly three seconds—she counted—and he actually smiled. Not the polite smile you give teachers. The REAL smile.
But that night, floating in Jake's pool with cheap snacks blasting music from someone's Bluetooth speaker, Maya realized something. The social pyramid wasn't actually real. These weren't gods and goddesses. They were just awkward teenagers trying to figure out who they were, same as her. Even Kai spent half the night standing alone by the snack table, checking his phone every thirty seconds.
She swam over to him. "You know," she said, treading water, "you're way cooler when you're not trying to look cool."
Kai laughed. "You've been watching me play baseball all season, haven't you?"
Her face burned. "I...uh..."
"It's cool," he said, shrugging. "I saw you. Behind the bleachers. Every Friday night."
Maya sank beneath the water's surface, letting it wash over her face. Sometimes the most embarrassing moments were also the perfect ones.
