The Baseball Goldfish's Secret
Lily sat under the old palm tree in her backyard, tossing her baseball up and catching it. *Thump. Thump.* The summer sun made everything shimmer.
"I wish I had someone to play with," she sighed, looking at her iPhone. No one was answering her messages. All her friends were at summer camp.
Suddenly, something magical happened. A tiny goldfish appeared in the air above her hands, swimming through the warm summer breeze as if it were water. Its scales sparkled like tiny stars.
"Hello, Lily!" bubbled the goldfish. "I'm Finn! I heard your wish."
Lily's eyes grew wide. "You can talk? And you're swimming in the air!"
"I'm a magical goldfish," Finn said with a grin. "And I love baseball! Want to play?"
"But you don't have hands," Lily laughed.
"Watch this!" Finn swam around the baseball, and suddenly it began floating in the air too! The goldfish nudged the ball forward with his nose, and Lily ran to catch it. They played catch under the palm tree, the baseball zooming through the air like magic.
"You're amazing!" Lily cheered. "This is the best game ever!"
Just then, Finn shimmered and grew transparent. "I have to go now," he said sadly. "I can only visit kids who really need a friend."
"Will I ever see you again?" Lily asked.
"Whenever you're lonely, just wish under a palm tree, and I'll hear you," Finn promised. "But remember Lily, real friends are special too. Put down your iPhone and look around. Magic is everywhere if you're paying attention."
With a splash of golden light, Finn disappeared.
The next day, Lily went to the park instead of texting on her phone. She saw a new girl sitting alone on a bench, holding a baseball glove.
"Want to play catch?" Lily asked with a smile.
The girl's face lit up. "Yes!"
As they played, Lily spotted a single fish-shaped cloud swimming across the blue sky above them. She winked at it, knowing that sometimes the best magic of all is making a new friend all by yourself.
And from that day on, Lily always kept her eyes open for magic—and friends—everywhere she went.
