The Baseball from the Stars

Leo sat on his front porch, watching the storm clouds gather. He gripped his favorite baseball tightly. Nobody wanted to play with him today—not even his little sister.

Suddenly, CRACK! A bolt of lightning flashed across the dark sky, striking something in his backyard with a brilliant purple glow.

Leo rushed outside. There, glowing softly on the grass, lay a baseball unlike any he'd ever seen. It shimmered like captured starlight, tiny sparks dancing across its surface.

"Greetings, Earth-friend!" squeaked a tiny voice.

Leo jumped back. The baseball had grown small arms and legs! It was the size of an apple, with a smile made of stardust.

"I'm Spark!" said the magical baseball. "I'm a spy from the Star Kingdom, sent to find children who love baseball enough to be our friend."

Leo's eyes widened. "A spy? Like in the movies?"

"Better!" Spark bounced happily. "I spy with my little eye children who need magic friends. The Stars have watched you play alone every day. We sent me to find you."

Leo couldn't believe it. The stars had noticed him? The lonely boy who always played catch against the garage wall?

"Play with me!" Leo exclaimed.

They played until sunset—Leo throwing, Spark zooming through the air leaving trails of sparkles, sometimes transforming into a baseball, sometimes a glowing star-child.

"I have to go home now," Spark said as the first star appeared. "But I'll return whenever you need a friend. Just whisper 'Spark!' into the wind."

"Will you really come back?" Leo asked, suddenly worried.

Spark bounced into Leo's hands. "Real friends always return. That's the most important rule in the universe—Star Kingdom AND Earth!"

With one last sparkling bounce, Spark shot into the sky like a tiny shooting star.

That night, Leo fell asleep smiling. He wasn't alone anymore. Somewhere up there, among a billion stars, was his very best friend.
