The Baseball Bear's Secret Friend
Leo loved baseball more than anything in the world. Every day after school, he would grab his favorite baseball—the one with the signature blue stitch—and practice pitching against the old oak tree behind his house. Leo's brown hair always fell into his eyes when he threw, but he didn't mind. He pretended he was pitching in the World Series, with thousands of cheering fans watching him strike out the best batter in history.
But there was one problem: Leo had no friend to play catch with. All the other kids in his neighborhood were too busy with video games or ballet lessons or piano practice. Leo would toss his baseball in the air and catch it himself, imagining someone else was throwing it back.
One sunny afternoon, Leo threw his baseball extra hard. It sailed past the oak tree, over the fence, and into the tangled woods beyond. Leo's heart sank. That baseball was his most special treasure—a birthday gift from his grandfather.
Leo climbed carefully through the fence, following the path of his baseball. The woods grew dark and mysterious. Then he heard something strange: a deep, rumbly sound, like a giant purring cat. Leo peeked behind a giant fern and gasped.
There sat a bear! But not just any bear—this bear had the shaggiest, softest-looking brown hair Leo had ever seen. And in the bear's giant fuzzy paws sat Leo's baseball.
"Is this yours?" the bear asked in a friendly, rumbly voice.
Leo was too surprised to speak. He just nodded.
"I'm Barnaby," the bear said, holding out the baseball. "I've watched you play for weeks. You throw like a professional!"
Leo's eyes went wide. "You've been watching me?"
"Every day," Barnaby said. "I've always wanted to learn baseball, but bears don't have friends who will teach them. Would you be my friend?"
Leo grinned from ear to ear. "Yes! I'd love to!"
For the next hour, Leo taught Barnaby how to hold a baseball, how to stand like a pitcher, and how to catch without using claws. Barnaby was a natural! His giant paws made catching look easy, and when he threw the ball, it flew higher than any Leo had ever seen.
They played until the sun began to set, painting the sky orange and pink.
"Thank you for being my friend," Barnaby said, his warm eyes shining. "I never thought a bear and a boy could be such good friends."
Leo hugged Barnaby's fuzzy neck. "The best things in life are the ones you don't expect—like finding a baseball-playing bear in the woods!"
Every day after that, Leo and Barnaby played baseball together. Leo learned that friendship can come in the most unexpected shapes and sizes, and sometimes the best friend you'll ever make has four legs and the shaggiest brown hair you've ever seen.
