The Baseball Bear
Leo wiped sweat from his forehead and picked up his favorite baseball. It was shiny and white, just like the moon. His golden retriever, Rusty, barked happily, wagging his tail so hard his whole body wiggled.
"Come on, boy!" Leo called. "Let's practice!"
They walked to the edge of the woods behind their house. Leo tossed the baseball high into the air. *Whoosh!* It flew over the trees and disappeared with a soft *plunk*.
Rusty bounded into the forest, his nose sniffing the ground. Leo followed, pushing aside ferns and stepping over mossy logs.
Deeper in the woods, something made Rusty stop. He growled softly, then his tail began to wag again.
There, sitting on a fallen log, was a huge brown bear. But the bear wasn't scary. He was holding Leo's baseball carefully in his giant paws, looking at it with gentle, curious eyes.
"That's my baseball," Leo whispered, his heart pounding like a drum.
The bear looked up and made a soft rumbling sound. He placed the baseball on the ground and nudged it toward Leo with his nose.
Leo stepped forward slowly. Rusty, sensing the bear's kindness, walked right up to the bear and licked his paw. The bear's mouth curved into what looked like a smile.
"Do you like baseball?" Leo asked.
The bear nodded his head! Leo couldn't believe it. He picked up the baseball and tossed it gently. The bear caught it in his paws and tossed it back with surprising grace.
They played catch for an hour — Leo, Rusty, and the baseball bear. When it was time to go, Leo promised, "I'll come back tomorrow. We can play again!"
The bear nodded, looking less lonely than before. As Leo walked home, he realized something important: friendship can come in the most unexpected shapes and sizes. Even a bear needs a friend.
That night, Leo dreamed of baseball games under the stars, with Rusty running bases and a gentle bear hitting home runs into the clouds.
