The Ball's in Your Court
The moment you realize your best friend is a padel-obsessed jock, your dog has a secret life, and the world has ended - but somehow, you're still worrying about your hair.
I stand frozen at the padel court, watching Lucas serve with his perfect form while my border collie Cooper goes absolutely mental behind the fence. The squeak of my sneakers against the court, the thwack of the ball against the glass wall—normal Saturday stuff. Until Cooper starts this low, guttural growl I've never heard before.
"Bro, your dog is tripping," Lucas says, ball in hand, giving me that look that says I'm embarrassing him again. Like I can control Cooper.
Then I see them. Five people staggering toward the court, moving wrong—jerky and unnatural, like someone glitching in a video game. My stomach drops.
"What the—" Lucas starts.
The first one crashes into the fence, face slack, eyes milky and wrong. A zombie. Actually fucking zombie. I'm expecting screaming, panic, Lucas to drop his padel racket and bolt like the track star he is. But he doesn't. He just stands there, racket still gripped tight, staring.
Then Cooper goes full guardian mode. He launches himself at the fence, teeth bared, barking like he's taking on an army. And suddenly—fifteen other dogs appear from nowhere, surrounding the court in a protective circle. Labs, German shepherds, a tiny chihuahua that looks fierce despite being the size of a shoe. They're all growling, hackles raised, forming a living barricade.
The zombies pause. They seem confused by this unexpected canine defense.
"Dude," Lucas whispers, finally dropping his racket. "Your dog just called in the cavalry."
I slide down against the glass wall, heart pounding, watching this impossible scene unfold. Cooper meets my eyes through the chainlink, tail giving a single, confident wag.
"You think he's been planning this?" I ask, half-hysterical.
Lucas drops beside me, leaning his head back against the court. "Man, I'm just glad I didn't ace that serve. We'd be dead."
We sit there, watching the dogs hold back the apocalypse, and I start laughing. I can't stop. Lucas joins in, and we're two idiots on a padel court while the world ends, howling with laughter as Cooper patrols his new kingdom like he's been training for this moment his entire life.
Some dogs chase balls. Mine saves lives.
