The Bad Haircut breakthrough

cablehairpadel

Maya stared at her reflection in the bathroom mirror, running her hand over the butchered chunks of **hair** the salon stylist had called "layers." Her mom had meant well, booking the appointment before high school started, but Maya looked like a poodle that lost a fight with a lawn mower.

"You look great, honey!" her mom called from downstairs. "Your cousins are coming over later—remember, Leon's been playing **padel** all summer, maybe you two will hit it off!"

Maya groaned. Padel—that tennis-ish sport everyone at school was suddenly obsessed with. She'd never held a racquet in her life.

She spent the morning hiding in her room, scrolling through padel tutorials on her phone until the ancient **cable** connecting their TV to the wall finally gave up. Static hissed across the screen where she'd been watching pro matches.

"Maya! Leon's here!"

Her heart dropped. She hadn't even bothered with makeup. Her hair was a disaster.

Leon stood in the driveway, all golden skin and easy confidence, holding a padel racquet. His dark curls fell perfectly—no butchered layers for him.

"Your mom said you wanted to learn," he said, not even flinching at her hair. "Come on."

The court was behind their house, painted a bright blue that hurt Maya's eyes. Her first swing sent the ball flying into the neighbor's bushes. Leon laughed—but not mean laughing. The kind that made Maya feel like maybe she wasn't completely hopeless.

"Here," he said, moving behind her. "Plant your feet. Like you're about to sit in a chair."

His hands guided hers into position. Maya's face burned. She could smell his coconut shampoo, feel the warmth of his chest near her shoulder.

"Now hit it like you mean something."

She did. The ball cracked against the glass wall, perfectly placed. They rallied for an hour, Maya's hair plastering itself to her forehead with sweat, her cheeks flushed, her arms burning.

"You're actually really good," Leon said afterward, sitting on the bench beside her. "We should play again tomorrow."

Maya's stomach did that terrifying flip. "Yeah?"

"Yeah." He paused. "And Maya? Your hair looks cool. It's got this whole edgy vibe."

She laughed in spite of herself. Maybe the poodle look was growing on her.

Inside, her mom gave her a knowing smile. "Fun?"

Maya touched her chaotic hair. "Actually? Yeah."

Tomorrow, she'd wear it messy on purpose. Tomorrow, she'd show up to that court ready. Tomorrow, she'd be the kind of girl who played padel and didn't apologize for her hair.

Baby steps.
