The Bad Hair Day That Changed Everything

Maya stared at her reflection in the bathroom mirror, horror-struck. The box had promised "Sunset Copper," but her hair looked more like a traffic cone explosion. Homecoming was in three hours, and she now resembled a human highlighter.

"May! You ready?" her best friend Jada yelled from downstairs. "Jordan's gonna be there tonight, you said you were finally gonna talk to him."

"Give me a sec!" Maya called back, frantically Googling "how to fix hair dye disaster in under an hour." The results were not encouraging.

She pulled her hoodie up, covering the disaster. It was fine. She'd just bear with it. Or better yet—she'd bear it. Actually, she could literally wear a bear headband from that spirit week last year. No, that was weird.

"Maya!"

She sighed and headed downstairs.

Jada's eyes went wide. "Oh... wow. That's... bold?"

"Don't. I know."

"You could still wear a cute hat?"

"It's inside the gym, Jada. Hats aren't allowed."

Her friend chewed her lip. "Okay. New plan. We own it. You're not 'the girl with orange hair'—you're 'the girl who's confident enough to rock orange hair.'"

Maya snorted. "You literally just used that exact phrase on me last week when I wanted to wear that hideous neon green dress to the spring formal."

"And you looked AMAZING in it. You're welcome."

When they got to the dance, Maya's palms were so sweaty she could barely hold her phone. She kept her hood up as long as possible, scanning the crowd for Jordan.

There he was. Standing near the punch bowl, looking unfairly good in his button-down and slacks. Meanwhile, Maya looked like she'd lost a bet with a box of crayons.

"Okay," Jada said, squeezing her arm. "Go over there. I'll be right here if you need backup."

"I can't. He's gonna think I look ridiculous."

"Maya." Jada turned her around. "Jordan has been watching you all year. He's not gonna suddenly stop liking you because your hair is orange. If anything, it's a conversation starter."

Maya took a deep breath and walked over, pulling down her hood.

"Hey, Jordan," she said, and her voice actually shook.

He turned. His eyes widened. "Maya?"

"Yeah, um, experimental phase," she said, gesturing vaguely at her head. "It's... a lot."

Jordan grinned. "Honestly? It's kinda awesome. Makes you look even more like you."

"Like me?"

"Yeah. You're always doing unexpected stuff. Remember when you brought that pet tarantula to biology?" He stepped closer. "I like that about you."

Maya felt her palms sweating all over again, but this time, she didn't mind.

"So," Jordan said, "wanna dance?"

She nodded, letting herself smile. "Yeah. Yeah, I do."

Later, as they swayed to a slow song, Maya caught Jada's eye across the gym. Her friend gave her a thumbs-up.

Her hair was still a disaster. But somehow, everything else was perfect.
