The Bad Hair Day That Changed Everything
Maya stared at her reflection, wanting to scream. Her hair, usually her one good thing, had decided to stage a rebellion. Massive frizz. Curls going in every direction except the right one. And today of all days — the Spring Fling, where Tyler had promised to save her a dance.
"This is a disaster," she groaned, dropping her forehead onto the bathroom counter.
Her cat, Luna, wound around her ankles, purring like a tiny motor. Luna had perfect fur always. Sleek, calico, effortlessly gorgeous. Some beings had all the luck.
"You're not helping," Maya told her. Luna blinked slowly, completely unbothered.
Her phone buzzed. Group chat blowing up.
*omg did you see Tyler's story* — Chen
Maya's stomach did that thing where it tried to exit her body. What if he'd posted something about their plans? What if he'd changed his mind? What if everyone was laughing at her for thinking she had a chance?
She grabbed her backpack and bolted out the door, hair disaster be damned. Literally running down the sidewalk, breath coming in weird gasps, because that's what happened when your brain wouldn't stop spiraling.
"Maya! WAIT UP!"
She slowed down, kinda ashamed of her panic sprint. Chen caught up, red-faced and grinning.
"Dude. You're missing it."
"Missing what?" Her voice cracked. Perfect.
"Tyler's story. He's been asking everyone where you are. He's literally wearing that stupid cat hoodie you hate because you said it was cute ironically that one time."
Maya stopped. "Wait. What?"
"He's been looking for you ALL MORNING. And get this —" Chen pulled out their phone, showing the screenshot "—he posted this at 7 AM. 'Does anyone know if Maya likes flowers? Asking for a friend.'"
The frizz in her hair suddenly seemed very unimportant.
"He thinks you're ghosting him," Chen added. "So maybe stop running and go find your boy before he has a complete meltdown."
Maya touched her hair. Whatever. It was fine. It was her.
"Yeah," she said, finally breathing again. "Yeah, okay."
Luna would be proud. Her human was finally getting it together.
