The Bad Hair Day That Changed Everything

Maya's hands wouldn't stop shaking as she stared at her reflection in the dusty bathroom mirror. The stylist had butchered her hair—what was supposed to be subtle layers turned into a choppy disaster. She looked like she'd stuck her finger in an electrical socket.

"You look fine," Chloe said, leaning against the doorframe, scrolling through her phone like she hadn't a care in the world. "It's just hair. It grows back."

Easy for Chloe to say. Her perfectly straight blonde hair always looked like she'd stepped out of a shampoo commercial.

The county fair was in full swing outside, music thumping from the rides, smell of fried everything hanging heavy in the air. Jake had been text-bombing Maya all morning: *U COMING?? Bull riding starts in 20.* Jake, who'd been her friend since kindergarten, who she'd been secretly crushing on for approximately forever.

"I'm not going anywhere looking like this," Maya said, fighting back tears. "Everyone will stare."

Chloe sighed dramatically. "So what if they stare? Jake's friend Devin is competing in the bull riding. He's been talking about it all week. If you don't show, Jake's gonna think you're flaking on him. Again."

That stung. Maya had been flaking a lot lately—ever since she'd started feeling weird about Jake, about everything. About how her body was changing, about how she didn't recognize herself anymore.

Outside, the announcer's voice boomed over crackly speakers. The crowd roared.

"Fine," Maya snapped, yanking a baseball cap low over her disaster hair. "Let's go. But I'm keeping this hat on."

They pushed through the fair crowds, past carnival games and food stands. The bull riding arena was packed. Jake spotted them immediately, waving from the front row where he'd saved seats.

"You made it!" Jake yelled over the noise, grinning. Then he noticed Maya's cap. "You okay?"

"Fine," she muttered, dropping into the seat beside him. Her face burned.

The announcer introduced the next rider: Devin from their school. The gates opened and a massive bull exploded into the arena, bucking wildly. Devin held on for an impressive four seconds before flying off into the dirt. The bull charged him—

And then the animal was running straight toward their section of the fence. People screamed, scrambling back. Maya's instinct kicked in before she could think. She grabbed Chloe's arm and Jake's shirt, yanking them backward as the bull slammed into the metal barricade inches from where they'd been sitting.

Her hat flew off. Her choppy, ridiculous hair tumbled into her face.

Maya froze, waiting for the laughter. Waiting for Jake to see her and grimace.

Instead, his eyes widened. "Whoa. Your hair..."

She flinched. But then he was grinning.

"It looks actually kind of cool? Like, edgy. You look like a different person."

Chloe nodded, looking impressed. "Yeah, not gonna lie, it works. Especially now that you're all badass bull survivor."

The bull riders were being cleared from the arena. Security was checking on everyone. Maya's heart was still hammering, but not from fear anymore.

She hadn't flaked. She'd shown up, even when she felt like hiding. And she'd kept her friends safe.

Her reflection in Jake's phone screen later that night told a different story than the bathroom mirror had. The hair was still a mess. But the girl wearing it wasn't hiding anymore.

She'd faced a literal bull today. What was a bad haircut compared to that?
