The Bad Hair Day Bet

Maya stared at her reflection, ready to cry. The home hair kit promised beach waves, but she looked more like she'd been electrocuted. Her normally sleek dark hair was now a frizzy disaster, sticking out in twenty directions at once. Meanwhile, in exactly three hours, she'd be facing Ethan—the cute junior who'd finally noticed her after two years of invisible girl status.

"It's fine," she told herself. "Just wear a beanie. In September. In California. Totally normal."

Her phone buzzed. Group chat: *Lake party tonight! Everyone's going!* Great. Perfect setting for her first social interaction with Ethan since he'd commented on her Instagram post. A lake party where she'd either melt in a beanie or reveal her hair disaster to the entire high school.

By 7 PM, she was at Fox Lake, regretting everything. The name came from some indigenous legend about a fox spirit that could shape-shift into human form. Maya wished she had that superpower. She'd shape-shift into someone whose hair cooperated with basic chemistry.

Ethan was there, looking annoyingly perfect in his swim trunks. He waved. Her stomach did that thing where it simultaneously wanted to throw up and also never leave his presence again.

She was awkwardly standing near the snacks when Brianna—aka The Fox, because she was cunning and somehow always got what she wanted—sauntered over. Brianna's perfectly blown-out hair moved like it was in a slow-motion hair commercial.

"Love the hat," Brianna said, her voice dripping with that fake sweetness that made Maya's skin prickle. "What's underneath?"

The group went silent. This was it. The moment. Maya could feel her face burning, probably turning the color of a ripe tomato. She reached for her beanie, ready to expose her hair tragedy and accept her fate as the girl who ruined her chances with Ethan before they even started.

"Wait," Ethan said, stepping forward. "Let me guess." He pointed at her beanie. "Bear or fox?"

"What?" Maya's brain short-circuited.

"Animal Crossing reference," he said, grinning. "Which villager are you hiding under there?"

Maya stared at him, then at Brianna, then back at Ethan. Her racing heart slowed. He wasn't asking about her hair. He was trying to include her in something, not expose her.

"Bear," she said without thinking. "Definitely bear."

"Respectable choice," Ethan nodded. "Bears are underrated."

Brianna rolled her eyes so hard Maya almost heard it and walked away. The moment passed, and somehow Maya was still standing, still intact, her secret safe for now. But later, when she finally took off the beanie to swim, nobody even cared about her messy waves. They were too busy laughing at her terrible cannonball form and arguing about which Animal Crossing villagers were actually best.

Maya learned two things that night: one, Ethan played Animal Crossing (major green flag), and two, maybe the stuff she stressed about wasn't as big a deal as her brain made it out to be. Her crazy hair survived. She survived. And sometimes bears weren't scary at all.
