The Backyard Portal
Leo discovered the magic on a Tuesday. He was playing in the backyard, tossing his baseball up and catching it, when he tripped over something strange half-buried in the grass. It was an old metal cable, thick and covered in mysterious symbols that seemed to glow when he touched them.
Curious, Leo gave the cable a gentle tug. Suddenly, the family's swimming pool began to shimmer like a billion fireflies were dancing above it. The water swirled into a sparkling blue portal!
"Whoa!" Leo whispered, leaning closer.
"Did I hear someone say 'whoa'?"
Leo jumped! Standing there was a girl—translucent and slightly green—wearing old-fashioned overalls. She looked like she might be a zombie, but her eyes were kind and twinkled like stars.
"I'm Penny," she said. "I've been stuck in that pool portal for seventy years! Want to play?"
Leo's eyes widened. "Really? You've been there the whole time I've been swimming?"
Penny giggled. "Only in the in-between space. Want to see my world?"
She held out her hand. Leo took it, and suddenly they were running through a meadow filled with flowers that sang like tiny bells. They played baseball with glowing orbs that giggled when you hit them. They climbed trees made of cotton candy and swung on vines of licorice.
"This is AMAZING!" Leo laughed. "But won't you get lonely here by yourself?"
Penny's smile faded a little. "Sometimes. The cable only opens when someone kind finds it."
Leo's heart squeezed. "You can come through! My mom makes the best chocolate chip cookies, and my little sister would LOVE you. She thinks ghosts are cool."
Penny's eyes filled with tears of joy. "Really? You'd share your world with me?"
"Of course!" Leo said. "Friends don't leave friends behind."
Hand in hand, they leaped back through the portal just as it began to close. From that day on, Penny became Leo's best friend. She even joined his baseball team—she was the fastest runner they'd ever seen, and her glow-in-the-dark uniform made her easy to spot in the outfield.
Leo learned that magic hides in unexpected places, and the best adventures are the ones you share with friends.
