The Backyard Detective
Emma's brown hair always stuck out in every direction, no matter how much she brushed it. Her mom called it "creative hair." Emma called it perfect for spying.
Every Saturday, Emma transformed into Agent E, the most important spy in the neighborhood. Her mission: solve mysteries with her trusty sidekick, a stuffed rabbit named Whiskers.
One cloudy afternoon, Emma spotted something strange behind the old oak tree. A figure shuffling slowly through the fallen leaves. Pale skin. Ragged clothes. Arms stretched forward like it was sleepwalking.
Emma's eyes went wide. "A zombie!" she whispered, hiding behind her garden gnome.
The zombie stumbled toward Emma's clubhouse. It moaned softly, dropping something shiny on the grass.
Emma's heart raced, but her spy training kicked in. Zombies in stories were scary. But real zombies? Maybe they just needed help.
"Hello?" Emma called, stepping out from behind the gnome. "Are you okay?"
The zombie looked up with sad blue eyes. It wasn't a monster at all. It was her neighbor, Mr. Henderson, wearing old clothes and pale makeup.
"I... I was practicing for my drama club's play," Mr. Henderson said embarrassedly. "I'm supposed to be a magical forest creature, not a zombie. I think I need more practice."
Emma laughed. "You were doing great! Very convincing." She picked up the shiny object he'd dropped. It was a beautiful blue marble.
"That's my lucky marble," Mr. Henderson said. "I was worried I'd lost it before the show. Thank you, Agent... what was your name again?"
"Agent E," Emma said with a grin. "And this is Agent Whiskers."
"Well, Agents," Mr. Henderson said, "would you like to be special guests at our play tomorrow? We could really use some expert spies in the audience."
Emma beamed so brightly her messy hair seemed to sparkle. "We'd love to!"
That Saturday, Emma learned something important: things aren't always what they seem. Even something scary like a zombie might just be someone practicing their magic. And sometimes the best mysteries end with new friends and front-row seats to a show.
Agent E's latest mission: complete.
