The Art of Showing Up

The pool party at Jessica's house was supposed to be my reentry into normal teenage existence after mom moved out. Instead, I sat on the deck in cutoffs I'd outgrown months ago, watching everyone else look effortless in their bikini tops and snapbacks.

"Yo, Marcus!" Caleb called, already waist-deep in the water. "Where's that legendary baseball arm?"

I shrugged. "Left it at home."

Truth was, I'd quit the team. Everything felt too performative lately—the way I walked, talked, played. Dad kept saying stuff would get easier, like he had some manual on teen fatherhood he wasn't sharing.

That's when I saw it: a calico cat crouched under the deck, ears flat, watching the chaos unfold with what looked suspiciously like judgment.

"What are you looking at?" I muttered.

The cat tilted its head.

"Marcus!" Jessica waved from the deep end. "Get in here or I'm telling everyone you still sleep with that stuffed bear from kindergarten!"

My face burned. How did she even know about Mr. Whiskers? I'd buried him deep in my closet months ago, ashamed to still need something soft to hold when nights got too quiet.

I stood up, heart hammering. The pool shimmered like liquid anxiety, but something shifted. Maybe it was the cat's I dare you stare. Maybe it was realizing everyone was already laughing anyway.

I dove in.

The water hit like shock therapy. When I surfaced, spluttering and chlorine-blind, Jessica grinned. "Finally."

I treaded water, floating between who I was and who I was becoming. It wasn't fixed—nothing was—but I'd shown up. Sometimes that's the whole game.

The cat, still watching, gave a slow blink of approval.
