The Art of Leaving

Elena stood at the baseline of the padel court, her racquet heavy in hand. The glass walls reflected a version of herself she barely recognized—the woman who'd chopped off twelve inches of hair two weeks ago, as if shedding skin could somehow shed the past.

"You're thinking about the meeting," Sarah said from across the net, bouncing the ball with rhythmic precision.

Elena didn't answer. Her mind was still in that conference room, watching Richard pace like a bull in a china shop, his aggression barely contained beneath an expensive suit. Twenty years of playing the corporate game, and she'd finally learned what her father had tried to teach her in the baseball diamond of her childhood: sometimes you have to stop swinging at pitches you can't hit.

"Serve," Sarah called out.

Elena tossed the ball up, her arm remembering the motion from countless afternoons watching her father pitch in the park. He'd been gone three years now, but his voice still echoed in her head: *Eye on the ball, Ellie. Always keep your eye on the ball.*

The ball hit the padel racket with a satisfying thwack, clearing the net. Sarah returned it easily. They fell into rhythm, the back-and-forth somehow easier than any conversation they'd had in months.

"I put in my notice," Elena said between points.

Sarah missed the return. "What?"

"Today. After Richard's presentation." Elena leaned against the glass wall, chest heaving. "He asked me to falsify the quarterly projections. Again. And I just—I couldn't do it anymore."

"You're forty-two, Elena. What will you do?"

"What I should have done at thirty." She touched her short hair, the pixie cut still foreign beneath her fingers. "I'm going to open that baseball academy for girls. The one I've been talking about since college."

Sarah stared at her, then slowly smiled. "You know what Dad would say."

"Yeah." Elena felt something loosen in her chest, something that had been wound tight for decades. "He'd say I finally learned to take the bull by the horns."
