The Art of Floating
The goldfish circled its bowl in the sterile waiting room, orange scales flashing beneath fluorescent lights. Elena pressed her palm against the cool glass, watching the creature's endless loop, thinking about how marriage had felt exactly like this — beautiful, contained, perpetually turning in the same directions.
Outside, the late-summer heat pressed against the windows. Her father's baseball glove sat on the passenger seat of her car, weathered leather still carrying the scent of every catch they'd never made together. He'd died three weeks ago, and she'd spent every day since swimming through the viscous grief that comes from realizing you'd built an entire adulthood on the foundation of someone who never really saw you.
"You're up next," the receptionist said, not looking up from her screen.
Elena nodded, reaching for her purse. The dog waiting near the door — an elderly golden retriever belonging to another patient — thumped its tail against the linoleum, a metronome marking time she couldn't afford to lose.
Her phone buzzed. Her soon-to-be-ex-husband again, asking about the division of possessions, as if splitting their DVD collection would somehow resolve the fundamental betrayal that had hollowed out their decade together. She'd told him she'd come to her father's lawyer to discuss the will, but really she was here to see the man who'd been her father's business partner for thirty years. The one who'd emailed her after the funeral: There are things about your father you should know.
The receptionist called her name.
Elena stood, leaving the goldfish to its endless revolutions. Some truths, she was learning, didn't set you free — they just taught you that the cage had always been there, and you'd simply never noticed the bars were made of your own willingness to believe in safety.
The dog watched her go, its tail still keeping time, marking the seconds until someone would finally let it out into the world where things — love, loss, the way a baseball feels leaving your hand — existed beyond the careful boundaries humans built around their hearts.
