The Art of Corporate Espionage

Elena had stopped pretending she wasn't the office spy three months ago. It was easier that way—lean into the rumor mill until it grinds itself down. She sat in her car at 2 a.m., the parking garage empty except for that stray dog that had been haunting the building for weeks. The dog had more integrity than anyone upstairs.

Inside, the pyramid scheme masquerading as a consulting firm hummed with fluorescent aggression. Elena was there to meet Marcus—her boss, her lover, the man who'd promised her partnership and given her an ulcer instead. The security footage she'd stolen would prove he'd been embezzling client funds into offshore accounts.

She found him in his office, nursing whiskey like it was penance.

"You're full of shit, Marcus," she said, placing the drive on his desk. "All that talk about family values, about us building something together. Just bull."

He didn't look surprised. "You think you're the first person to figure it out? You think you're some fox who outsmarted the farmer? Elena, honey, you're just the next one in line."

He poured her a drink she didn't want. "You're good at your job. That's why I hired you. That's why I fucked you. But you're not special. Nobody is."

The dog scratched at the glass door behind her, a rhythmic reminder that somewhere, loyalty still existed. Outside, the city skyline formed its own pyramid—hierarchical, ruthless, beautiful. Elena realized she'd been climbing the wrong ladder all along.

"I quit," she said, and meant it.

She drove home with the dog in the passenger seat, its head resting against her thigh. For the first time in years, something about the future felt like hers to choose.
