The Art of Corporate Espionage

Elena ran her fingers through graying hair, staring at the surveillance footage on her phone. There was Marcus, her supposed friend of fifteen years, rifling through her desk drawer at 2:17 AM. The grainy timestamp revealed everything.

"He's been a corporate spy the whole time," she whispered to the empty office.

The irony tasted bitter. They'd celebrated promotions together, mourned failed projects over whiskey, comforted each other through divorces. Marcus had been her anchor during the worst year of her life — her mother's slow death, the foreclosure, the collapse of her second marriage. And all along, he'd been feeding confidential client data to their competitor.

She remembered their last conversation, just yesterday at the water cooler. Marcus had leaned in close, his breath smelling of coffee and deceit. "The board's looking for someone to take the fall for the data breach, El. You should watch your back."

Charming. He was setting her up to be the sacrificial lamb while positioning himself as the savior who'd "discover" the betrayal.

Outside her window, the Chicago skyline softened into twilight. She thought about calling him, confronting him. But what was the point? Every business relationship operated on the same principle as the stock market: bulls made money, bears made money, and pigs got slaughtered. She'd been the pig — trusting, emotional, utterly blind to the most basic calculus of self-interest.

Elena deleted the footage. She'd need it later, but not now. Instead, she composed an email to the board of directors, attaching the decrypted files Marcus had stolen — files he didn't know she'd duplicated and encrypted. The report wasn't about corporate theft at all. It was about the rigged bidding process that had been inflating their stock price for three years.

Marcus wasn't just a spy. He was the architect of the entire scheme.

She pressed send, then poured herself a glass of water. It tasted clean, pure, like the truth finally freeing her from years of manipulation. Tomorrow would be brutal — legal battles, investigations, the complete dismantling of everything they'd built. But for tonight, Elena sat in the quiet office and watched the city lights flicker below, feeling something she hadn't felt in years: entirely, devastatingly alone.

And absolutely free.
