The Architecture of Storms
Elena smoothed the silk scarf around her neck, her palms sweating despite the office's aggressive air conditioning. In twenty minutes, she'd present the reorganization plan to the board—a streamlined corporate pyramid that would eliminate three hundred jobs, including Marcus's.
Her phone buzzed. *'Dinner tonight? Same place.'*
Marcus had no idea. He thought they were still building their future together, those lazy Sundays when she'd read his palm lines and pretend she believed in destiny, telling him his lifeline promised longevity. She'd traced the heart line with deliberate fingers, knowing exactly how the evening would end—in his bed, in his arms, in a betrayal that felt like falling.
Outside floor-to-ceiling windows, lightning fractured the sky. The storm had been building all day, the air thick with unsaid things.
'You okay?' someone asked.
Elena jumped. It was Tom from HR, the only person who knew about the layoffs before today. The only person who knew she'd recommended Marcus for termination while sleeping with him three nights a week.
'Fine,' she said. 'Just thinking about the pyramid.'
He looked at her strangely. 'The org chart?'
'Everything.' She pressed her palm against the cool glass. 'Sometimes structures need to break before they can rebuild.'
Another flash of lightning illuminated the boardroom where twelve people waited for her presentation. Twelve people who'd sign off on destroying three hundred lives. Marcus would find out this afternoon—his pink slip, then somehow, later, her other truths.
Her phone lit up again. *'Can't wait to see you.'*
Elena deleted the message, opened her presentation, and walked toward the door as thunder shook the building.
