The Architecture of Regret

Elena stared across the table at Marcus, watching him work through his salad with methodical, predatory bites. The corporate **spy** who'd dismantled her team at Axiom Global three years ago, now sat here in her apartment, eating food she'd purchased with her severance package.

"You've got something," Marcus said, gesturing to his own teeth.

She excused herself to the bathroom. **Spinach**. Of course. She brushed it away, avoiding her own eyes in the mirror—eyes that still looked for her sister in every crowd, three years after Sarah's disappearance.

When she returned, Marcus was playing with the glass pyramid paperweight on her desk—a going-away gift from colleagues who'd silently watched her professional execution.

"Corporate hierarchy," he said, turning the crystal object. "Always a **pyramid** scheme, isn't it? Someone at the top, everyone else climbing over each other to get closer to the light."

"Some of us were just trying to do our jobs," Elena said, her voice flat.

"I know what you did, Elena. The files you copied before you left. The insurance files." He set down the pyramid. "I never reported it."

She felt cold. "Why?"

"Because I knew you were looking for her. Your sister." Marcus leaned forward. "I have information, Elena. About what really happened to Sarah."

This was **bull**shit. He was manipulating her again, just like at Axiom. But something in his expression made her pause.

"The corporate investigation," he continued, "it wasn't about ethics violations. It was about covering up something bigger. Sarah found it. That's why she's gone."

Elena's heart hammered. "What are you saying?"

"I'm saying I can help you find her. But you have to trust me."

She looked at this man who'd destroyed her career, who represented everything she'd spent decades fighting against. And realized that sometimes, the only way up was through the rubble of your own ruin.
