The Architecture of Falling

The padel court echoed with hollow impacts—racquet against ball, ball against glass, truth against silence. Elena watched from the sidelines as her husband Marco demolished his VP in straight sets, each victory a rung up the corporate pyramid they'd both been climbing for fifteen years. Tomorrow, Marco would present the reorg plan that would eliminate three departments, including Elena's. He hadn't told her yet. She'd found the draft on his iPad. Somewhere between love and ambition, they'd chosen wrong.

A stray cat appeared along the perimeter fence—calico, missing half an ear, moving like it owned the facility. The cat settled beneath Elena's chair and began grooming itself with solemn indifference.

"You're not playing?" Marco called across the court, sweat gleaming on his forehead like triumph.

"Not feeling it," she said. Her pulse was already running too fast.

The cat looked up at her, gold eyes holding a wisdom that had nothing to do with quarterly projections or stock options. It had survived without compromise. Elena remembered the running club they'd joined together, before the promotions and the corner office and the slow erosion of everything that didn't serve the climb. They used to run beside each other. Now they were running in opposite directions.

"Game point," someone shouted.

Marco smashed the winner. His colleagues cheered. The cat licked its paw and kept cleaning itself. Elena stood up, walked to the edge of the court, and realized with terrifying clarity that she was about to become collateral damage in someone else's success story. The pyramid demanded sacrifices, and she was finally computing the cost.

"Marco," she said. He turned, victorious and radiant and completely unprepared for what she was about to say. "We need to talk."

The cat stretched, indifferent to human ruin, and began padding toward the exit.
