The Architecture of Escapes

Maya sat on the edge of her bathtub, staring at the dusty **cable** coiled like a dead snake beside her—a remnant of the television she'd thrown out three months ago when she decided she needed to be more present, more intentional. Instead, she'd become more exhausted, more hollowed out by the relentless demands of senior management at the firm.

Her therapist had suggested she take **vitamin** D supplements. 'You're inside all day,' Dr. Chen had said, clicking her pen with annoying precision. 'Your body thinks it's living in a cave.' Maya had laughed, but now she held the orange bottle in her palm, wondering if any pill could fix the particular kind of darkness that accumulated over fifteen years of climbing the corporate **pyramid**—each promotion another floor with thinner air and fewer people you could actually trust.

Her phone buzzed on the counter. Mark. Again.

She'd told him she needed space after the incident at the holiday party—when he'd made that joke about how she'd finally 'made it' now that she could afford to fire people. He hadn't understood why she'd walked out. Why she'd walked home three miles in December without her coat.

The irony wasn't lost on her: she now made more in a week than both her parents had combined in a year. She wore the right **hat** for every occasion—strategic visionary during Monday morning meetings, compassionate mentor during performance reviews, ruthless decision-maker during budget cuts. But underneath it all, she felt like she was **swimming** through concrete, each movement harder than the last, the surface always visible but somehow always just out of reach.

Tonight was the annual retreat in Cabo. The team-building exercises. The open bar where people would say things they couldn't take back. The beach where colleagues would become something else, something messier.

She'd packed her bag twice already.

Maya dropped the vitamin bottle into the trash can. Some voids weren't meant to be filled.
