The Answer on the Screen

The dog lay dead on the road—still somehow, the image that kept repeating in Elena's mind as she packed the last box. Three years with Marcus, and their relationship had ended not with a scream but with the sickening thud of brake failure on a Tuesday morning.

They'd found the sphinx moth on the windowsill that evening, its wings dusted with gold, clinging to the glass like some omen. Marcus had laughed—dark humor, always his defense—as if the universe was mocking them with riddles they couldn't solve.

Now the cable guy was in the living room, his head bent over the tangle of wires behind the television. Elena watched his hands work: precise, practiced. He disconnected everything. Their shared Netflix queue. Their playlists. The digital archive of a life built together.

"You're running this to the new place?" he asked, not looking up from the coaxial cable.

"Actually," she said, "just cancel it."

He straightened, his knees cracking. "You sure? That's the premium package."

She looked at the blank screen where she'd learned of Marcus's affair—some notification popping up while they watched Netflix, a message from someone named Sofia that had made her stomach drop. The cable had been running that night too, bringing them both entertainment and destruction in equal measure.

The sphinx moth outside had asked its question: What walks on four legs in the morning, two at noon, three in the evening? The answer was man, but Elena had been thinking about love instead. Love on four legs when it's new and eager. Love on two when you stand together. Love dragging itself on three when something breaks and you're too tired to fix it.

"Yes," she told the cable guy. "I'm sure."

Later, driving away with the boxes stacked around her, she passed the spot on the road where the dog had died. Someone had already cleared it away. The asphalt held only a faint stain, dark against the gray.

She pressed the accelerator and kept running.
