The Accidental Hero
Marcus's life was basically one continuous awkward moment, but today took the cake. His golden retriever, Buster, had just bolted toward the popular table during lunch, dragging Marcus across the cafeteria like a ragdoll.
"Buster, no!" Marcus yelled, but the dog was already face-deep in someone's backpack.
The entire lunchroom went silent. And then, of course, Chloe—the girl Marcus had been lowkey stalking on Instagram since August—started laughing. Not mean laughing. Like, actually laughing.
"Your dog is hilarious," she said, reaching down to pet Buster. "I'm Chloe, by the way. I know who you are."
Marcus's brain short-circuited. She knew who he was? Since when?
Before he could respond, Jason—aka the resident bully who lived to make freshmen miserable—loomed over them. "Great entrance, loser. Did you train your dog to humiliate you, or does that come naturally?"
Marcus's face burned. But then Buster did something unexpected: he stood between Marcus and Jason, a low growl rumbling in his throat.
"Whoa, chill," Jason said, backing up. "Crazy dog."
"He's not crazy," Marcus found himself saying. "He's just loyal. Something you wouldn't understand."
The table went oooooh. Jason's face turned dark. But before anything else could happen, the principal appeared. Jason slunk away, shooting Marcus a look that promised future retaliation.
"You okay?" Chloe asked, her hand still on Buster's head.
"Yeah," Marcus said, his heart pounding. "Sorry about your lunch."
"Whatever," she said with a shrug. "Hey, you want to sit with us? Buster too."
Marcus froze. This wasn't supposed to happen. In the movies, this was the part where he got his tray knocked out of his hands, not where he got invited to sit with the cool kids.
"Seriously?" he asked.
"Dude," said the guy next to Chloe, "you just stood up to Jason and survived. That's legendary. Plus, your dog is a total vibe."
As Marcus sat down, Buster settling at his feet like he owned the place, Marcus realized something: sometimes the most embarrassing moments could become the best ones. And maybe he didn't have to spy on Chloe's life from afar anymore.
Maybe, just maybe, he was part of it now.
