The 2 AM Awakening
Maya's palms were sweating against her phone screen as she stared at the group chat. Pool party. Tonight. Everyone's going. The words blurred together like everything had since finals week began. She'd been walking through life like a zombie for days—three hours of sleep, energy drinks for breakfast, her brain officially filed under 'out to lunch.'
"You coming?" Kai's text popped up.
Maya hesitated. Social exhaustion vs. missing out. The eternal teenage struggle.
"Maybe," she typed, then deleted. "Yeah."
The pool party was exactly what she expected—too loud, too many people trying too hard. Maya sat on the edge of the patio, her zombie mode fully activated, watching everyone else live their best lives. That's when she noticed Violet, the weird girl from her English class, standing alone by the deep end, looking like she was debating the merits of faking her own disappearance.
They made eye contact. Something unspoken passed between them—the universal I'm not vibing with this either signal.
"Wanna get out of here?" Violet asked, appearing beside her like magic.
Maya's phone buzzed. Another text from Kai: "Where r u?"
She ignored it. "Yes. A thousand times yes."
They ended up at the neighborhood pool that Violet's grandma managed—locked up for the night, but Violet knew the code. The water was still and dark, reflecting the moon like a mirror.
"No way," Maya said. "We'll get caught. We'll literally die."
"Living dangerously," Violet grinned, already pulling off her hoodie. "Swimming in our underwear. Peak rebellion."
Maya laughed, surprised by how good it felt. The zombie was waking up.
They jumped in, the shock of cold water electric. Everything else faded away—the pressure, the expectations, the constant noise. Just the water, the moon, and this sudden friendship blooming in the dark.
Floating on their backs afterward, staring at the stars, Violet reached out and traced the lines on Maya's palm. "You know, my grandma says these mean you're going to do something important."
Maya looked at her hand, then at Violet, really seeing her for the first time. "Yeah?"
"Yeah. Something brave."
The zombie was gone. For the first time in weeks, Maya felt completely, powerfully alive.
