Tangled Up in Tuesday

Maya's hair was supposed to be her armor. She'd spent two hours flat-ironing it into submission, ignoring her mom's voice echoing from the kitchen: "Did you take your vitamin D, sweetie? You've been inside all winter."

"Yeah, yeah," Maya muttered, scrolling through her phone. Her hair was perfect. Straight. Sleek. Totally not hers.

She was supposed to meet Tyler at the coffee shop at 4. Tyler, who'd sat behind her in bio since September and finally noticed her existence three weeks ago. Tyler, who'd never seen her with her natural curls.

Maya's dog, Buster—a chaotic golden retriever mix—had other plans. As she leaned down to tie her sneakers, Buster bolted. His claws clicked wildly against the hardwood as he chased something down the hallway.

"Buster! NO!"

The crash came from her room. Maya sprinted back to find disaster: Buster had gotten tangled in the HDMI cable from her gaming setup, yanking her entire console off the shelf. But worse—he'd knocked over her sister's open bottle of dietary supplements. Little vitamin capsules scattered everywhere like tiny confetti.

And Buster? Buster was now wearing her flat iron like a very unfortunate necklace, the cord wrapped around his neck.

"Oh my GOD."

Maya dropped to her knees, carefully untangling the cable from Buster's legs. He wagged his tail, entirely unbothered, as she freed him. The flat iron clattered to the floor—still hot, still on.

She looked at her hair. The humidity from her panicked breathing was already making it frizz at the roots. The perfect straight parts were going fuzzy. Her curls were waking up.

Her phone buzzed. Tyler: "I'm here. You coming?"

Maya stared at herself in the mirror. Her hair was half-straight, half-curly. A mess. A real, honest mess.

She thought about the vitamins scattered across her floor. How her mom kept reminding her to take care of herself from the inside out. How she'd been trying to be someone else for weeks—straightening, contouring, performing—for a guy she barely knew.

Maya grabbed her hoodie. She didn't redo her hair. She didn't clean up the vitamin capsules.

She texted back: "Actually, can we reschedule? I have something I need to do."

When she called her mom later, voice shaking slightly, "Hey, can you teach me how to take care of my curls?"

Her mom's voice softened. "I've been waiting for you to ask."

Some days, the universe (and your dog) has to destroy your perfect plans to help you find the right ones.
