Tangled Leash
Maya's fingers flew across her iPhone screen, double-tapping likes without really seeing them. Another DM from The Group Chat—plans were changing, again. She'd been benched from tonight's hang because someone's cousin was visiting, and apparently that took priority.
"Whatever," she muttered, shoving her phone deep into her hoodie pocket. Her dad was still droning on about the cable bill climbing another fifteen bucks. The living room felt claustrophobic, smelling like stale popcorn and unresolved tension.
She grabbed her shoes and bolted. Running had become her escape lately—Wind in her face, pavement rhythm beneath her sneakers, the kind of clarity you can't get from 47 notifications screaming for attention.
Three blocks in, she saw it: a golden retriever booking it down the middle of the street, dragging a leash behind it like a defeated snake. No owner in sight.
Maya vaulted a chain-link fence—something track-star her would've never attempted—and sprinted after the dog. It bounded toward someone's front yard, where the cable TV lines drooped low between poles. The retriever ducked under, weaving through suburban obstacles like it was playing an IRL video game.
She cornered it near a playground, breathless and sweating. The dog sat, tail thumping, as if this whole chase had been its idea all along.
The collar tag read "BANDIT." Maya's hands shook as she fumbled for her iPhone to snap a picture for the lost pet flyers, but then she noticed Bandit was wearing an AirTag. Smart.
What happened next surprised her: she ended up sitting on that playground bench with Bandit for twenty minutes, talking to a dog like he was the only good listener in her life. She told him about how fake everything felt lately, how she missed when friendship didn't require constant digital maintenance.
Bandit's owner found them crying—just a few tears, nothing major—and offered to drive Maya home. They exchanged numbers. Now she had plans for the weekend that didn't involve waiting around for anyone to invite her somewhere.
Her iPhone dinged with another group chat update. She left it on read.
