Taking the Bull by the Horns

Maya stared at her reflection, fingers twisting a frizzy curl around her index finger. The hair situation was officially a crisis. Three hours until the Summer Kickoff Party and her curls were staging a rebellion.

"You've been in there forever," her little brother Leo yelled through the door. "Some of us need to shower!"

"Five minutes!" Maya applied another coat of gel, but her hair had other plans. Typical.

At the club, the popular kids were already at the padel courts. Maya watched from behind the snack bar, nursing a strawberry smoothie, pretending to be absorbed in her phone. Actually, she was watching Jake—the guy she'd had a crush on since seventh grade—laughing with perfect smooth-haired Taylor as they smashed padel balls back and forth.

Her palm was practically sweating through her phone case. Just go over there, she told herself. What's the worst that could happen?

"Hey, Maya!" It was Chloe, waving from a picnic table near the baseball diamond. "Save me from awkward small talk with my cousin?"

Grateful for the rescue, Maya joined her. Chloe's cousin turned out to be this quiet guy wearing a backwards baseball cap who actually laughed at Maya's terrible jokes about the club's overpriced food.

"I'm Ethan," he said. "And I think your hair is cool. Mine's just... boring."

Maya touched her curls self-consciously. "You think?"

"Yeah, it's got personality. Unlike some people."

He nodded toward the padel courts, where Jake was showing off like a bull in a china shop, practically charging around the court while Taylor politely applauded.

"He's not that bad," Maya said, though she wasn't convincing anyone.

"Sure." Ethan grinned. "But you know what they say—sometimes you gotta take the bull by the horns. Or in this case, maybe the padel racket."

Maya laughed. For the first time all summer, her curls didn't feel like a crisis.

"Wanna play?" Ethan pointed toward the empty padel court. "I promise I'm terrible."

"Deal." Maya set down her smoothie and followed him, feeling lighter than she had in months. Maybe the perfect summer wasn't about fitting in with Jake and Taylor. Maybe it was about finding people who got the joke.

And maybe, just maybe, her hair was fine exactly as it was.
