Maya's thumb hovered over the screen, her iPhone practically burning in her hand. Group chat buzzed: *You guys see Jordan's story?* Maya pretended not to care, but she was totally that person who opened it the second it popped up. She felt like such a spy, lurking through his posts at midnight, analyzing every caption like it held the meaning of the universe.
Meanwhile, her brother's dog Buster was losing it downstairs—barking at nothing, probably the cat again. Whiskers sat on the windowsill, judging everyone with that look cats perfected centuries ago. Typical Friday night: creeping on crushes while the pets reenacted the animal version of Mean Girls.
*Wanna hang?* Jordan's DM hit at 11:47 PM. Maya's heart did that embarrassing flutter thing. They'd been talking for weeks, but this was different. Actual plans. Actual risk.
Next day: Bear Creek Trail. Maya wore her 'I'm not trying too hard' outfit (which took 45 minutes to plan). Jordan showed up with that effortless grin that made everyone else feel like they were overthinking everything.
'My dad says bear sightings are up,' Jordan said, adjusting his backpack. 'We should probably stay on the main path.'
Maya nodded. 'Smart. Bears and I are not vibing today.'
They walked and talked about nothing and everything—school stress, the weird lunch lady, how Mr. Harrison's history class was basically a nap period. Jordan was actually funny, not just Instagram-caption funny. His phone stayed in his pocket. Hers too. The spy game felt childish now.
Then they heard it—a twig snap, followed by a low grunt.
Jordan grabbed her arm. 'That was not a dog.'
About fifty yards away: a massive black bear, just existing like it owned the place. Maya's brain short-circuited. Every scary movie moment ever, happening in real time.
'Back away slowly,' Jordan whispered, his hand still on her arm. 'No sudden moves.'
They retreated in silence, Maya's heart hammering against her ribs like it was trying to escape. The bear glanced at them, then went back to doing bear things.
Once safely back at the trailhead, Jordan cracked up. 'That was absolutely unhanded.'
Maya started laughing too, relief flooding her system. 'I'm never living that down. 'Remember when we almost got murked by a bear?' Great weekend memory.'
Jordan smiled. 'Hey, at least we got a story out of it.'
Later that night, Maya opened her iPhone. The group chat was blowing up, everyone wanting details. But she didn't feel like a spy anymore. She typed back: *It was actually kind of perfect.*
Whiskers jumped onto her bed, purring like nothing had changed. But everything had.
