Swipe Right on the Bear
Maya's thumbs flew across her iPhone screen, double-tapping Instagram posts like her life depended on it. She was supposed to be watching Jake play padel—that tennis-ish sport all the rich kids played—but her brain was stuck in an infinite scroll loop.
"You're missing his backhand!" Chloe whispered. Maya's best friend lived for these Saturday padel sessions at the country club. Maya mostly came for the very remote possibility that Jake would finally notice her.
She glanced up. Jake, with his perfect hair and perfectly faded jersey, caught her eye and smiled—that devastating smile that made her forget how to human. Her phone buzzed. seventeen new likes. The dopamine hit was almost as good as Jake's attention.
Then everything went sideways.
A massive shape lumbered onto the padel court, cutting through Jake's victory celebration like a hairy glitch in the matrix.
"Is that a BEAR?" someone screamed.
Maya's phone was recording before her brain processed it. The bear looked confused, maybe judging everyone's padel technique. It stood there, snout twitching, while thirty teenagers either froze or scattered.
Jake threw his racket. Bad move. The bear huffed, clearly unimpressed.
That's when it happened. The most iconic moment of Maya's sixteen years.
A cat—a tiny calico cat Maya had seen sleeping near the courtside snacks—sauntered out from under the bench. It walked up to the bear, meowed once, and the bear turned and left like it was late for an appointment.
The cat sat down, grooming itself like nothing happened.
Maya's video went viral in three hours. #CourtsideCat trended globally. Jake slid into her DMs: "That cat's a legend. Want to hang after practice?"
Chloe was still screaming about how they'd almost died, but Maya just sat there, watching the little cat groom its paw, realizing sometimes the most unexpected moments—like bears at padel matches and cats saving the day—were exactly what you needed to finally swipe right on life.
