Swipe Right Into Padel

Maya's thumb hovered over her iPhone screen, double-tapping another photo of Chloe in her cute Lululemon outfit. #PadelPrincess. The caption made Maya's stomach do that familiar flip-flop thing.

"You're still obsessing?" best friend Jaya rolled her eyes, scrolling through TikTok. "Just join the stupid club already."

"Easy for you to say," Maya muttered, shoving her phone in her pocket. "You're not the one who's never even held a racquet."

Two days later, Maya found herself standing at the local padel courts, heart pounding like she'd been running a marathon. Her dad had signed her up as a 'confidence booster' — aka his latest attempt to fix whatever he thought was wrong with her.

"Newbie!" a voice called. Maya spun around to see CHLOE. Actual Instagram Chloe, wearing the same outfit from her post. "You're Maya, right? I saw your dad's Insta. Welcome to our Tuesday group!"

Maya managed something between a smile and a grimace. Her mom had packed her a 'healthy pre-sport snack' which turned out to be sliced papaya in a questionable Tupperware. Because nothing says 'cool athlete' like tropical fruit that everyone knows makes your breath smell weird.

The first ten minutes were a disaster. Maya tripped over her own feet, swung at air three times, and accidentally hit the ball into the next court. She was mentally calculating how long it would take to fake an injury when her phone started buzzing in her bag.

Not now, not now, NOT NOW.

But when she saw the papaya container sitting on the bench, something clicked. So what if she looked ridiculous? Everyone started somewhere.

Maya grabbed a slice and stuffed it in her mouth, mango smell be damned. Then she marched back to the court.

"Okay," she said to Chloe, who looked like she was trying not to laugh. "Teach me the forehand again. And don't let me hit it into the parking lot this time."

Chloe grinned. "Finally. Now you're talking."

By the end of practice, Maya was tired, sweaty, and pretty sure she'd pulled something in her shoulder. But when Chloe asked for her Insta handle, Maya found herself smiling for real.

Later that night, she posted her first court selfie. No filters, no fancy outfit. Just Maya, slightly messy hair, holding a borrowed racquet like she actually knew what she was doing.

The caption: Day 1 of not sucking at padel. (Okay, mostly not sucking.) #NewbieVibes

Her phone buzzed immediately. A like from @ChloeV serves, followed by a DM: Same time next week? Bring more of that papaya stuff, it's actually lowkey good.

Maya laughed out loud, then tapped out: You're on.

Some things, she decided, were worth running toward. Even if it meant looking silly first.
