Maya's iPhone buzzed in her hand, but she didn't look. She was too busy trying not to embarrass herself during her first week at the fancy country club her parents had joined. At fifteen, being the new kid everywhere was exhausting.

Her hair was already defying gravity in the humidity, frizzing into a halo that definitely wasn't the sleek beach waves she'd attempted that morning. Great. Just great.

"You're up for padel!" some guy called out, gesturing to the court where everyone seemed annoyingly athletic.

"I don't know how to play," Maya muttered.

"It's like tennis but easier," a girl with perfect ponytail hair said. "We're partners. I'm Jess."

The game started disastrously. Maya kept swinging at air while her phone burned in her pocket—Colton, her crush from back home, had been texting her all morning, and she'd been leaving him on read. Why? Because she was terrified.

Then it happened. A serve came rocketing at her, and without thinking, she started running toward it, hair flying everywhere, legs pumping, and—SMASH. She returned it perfectly. The ball hit the back wall with a satisfying thunk.

"YESSS!" Jess screamed, high-fiving her. "Where did that come from?!"

Maya laughed, actually laughed. Her phone buzzed again. She checked it automatically: another text from Colton.

Suddenly, lightning split the sky above the court, followed instantly by thunder that shook the ground. Everyone started running toward the clubhouse, laughing and shrieking.

"Your turn!" Jess yelled, grabbing Maya's hand. "Race you!"

They sprinted through the sudden downpour, hair plastering to their faces, clothes soaking through. By the time they reached the covered patio, they were breathless and drenched, looking ridiculous.

Maya's phone buzzed one more time. Colton again. But instead of answering, she looked at Jess—this stranger who'd made her feel like she belonged somewhere for the first time in months.

"Tomorrow," Maya said, grinning. "Same time?"

Jess's smile was lightning bright. "Bet."

Maya finally opened her messages, but instead of replying to Colton, she screenshotted the weather radar and sent it to her new friend with the caption: ⚡🎾⚡
