Swing & A Prayer

Maya's iphone vibrated against her thigh like a nervous heartbeat. *Another rejection.* Three parties this weekend and she was still on the couch, scrolling through everyone else's perfect lives.

"You coming?" Chen stood at the door, padel bag slung over his shoulder like he belonged there. Like the court wasn't the seventh circle of social hell.

She grabbed her racket. "Yeah. Let me just—"

"Your mom's pyramid scheme texts again?" Chen smirked.

"It's NOT a pyramid scheme, it's—whatever. Yes."

They walked to the courts in silence, Maya's phone burning in her pocket. The air smelled like expensive perfume and desperation. The Pyramid Sports Complex loomed ahead, its glass walls reflecting everyone she was trying to impress.

"Hey!" Ryan waved from court 4, surrounded by the kind of people who somehow made sweat look elegant. "We're rotating if you wanna—"

Maya's stomach did that thing where it tried to exit her body through her throat.

"She's got this," Chen said, and the worst part was he believed it.

She stepped onto the court, racket slippery against her palm. *Swing and miss. Swing and connect. Swing and pray.*

The ball came at her and she swung—

*CRACK.*

It sailed over the fence, over the parking lot, and into the neighborhood beyond.

Everyone stared.

Then a dog bolted from nowhere, a golden retriever with zero chill and maximum determination, chasing after her mistake like it was the best thing that ever happened to him.

"BRUNO! NO!" A guy came sprinting after the dog, and Maya recognized him—Lucas from her AP Bio class, who she'd been lowkey crushing on since September.

They stood there, frozen, as Lucas and Bruno disappeared into the distance after her ballistic shot.

Her iphone chimed. *New Instagram story from Ryan: Maya and the Outfield.*

She closed her eyes. This was it. The end. Social suicide. She'd be known as Padel Girl forever, the girl who literally hit the ball into the next ZIP code.

"That was... legendary," Chen said finally.

"What?"

"That distance? That *launch*?" He held up his hand for a high five. "You sent that ball to another dimension."

Ryan and the populars were laughing, but not at her. With her.

"Bro, that was SICK," someone called.

Lucas returned, red-faced and breathless, dog trotting proudly beside him with a tennis ball in his mouth. "Found him. And your ball. It's... in someone's backyard."

Maya looked at Lucas, at Chen, at the dog who was now being worshipped by Ryan's group for retrieving the evidence of her failure.

"Cool," she said. "That's... cool."

Her phone chimed again. *Lucas (Bio) followed you.*

"So," Lucas said, wiping sweat from his forehead. "You're coming to the party at Jenna's tonight, right?"

Maya looked at her racket. At the court. At the Pyramid gleaming above them all.

"Yeah," she said, and maybe it was the adrenaline or maybe it was just time, but she smiled. "Yeah, I think I am."
