Swimming in Deception

dogspyswimming

Maya adjusted the leash in her hand, watching Buster—a Golden Retriever with impeccable corporate breeding credentials—sniff at the meticulously manicured hedges. Another Tuesday, another surveillance walk. She'd spent eighteen months as a corporate spy, infiltrating startups and Fortune 500s alike, but posing as a dog walker for the CEO of Emery Pharmaceuticals was almost insulting.

Almost.

"Come on, Buster," she murmured, checking her phone. The microcamera collar around the dog's neck had captured yesterday's meeting—Emery and his VP discussing the clinical trial failures they'd buried. Evidence that would destroy the company's stock, ruin careers, possibly save lives. Maya had stopped caring about which side she was on three assignments ago.

The front door opened. Emery himself stepped out, tie already loosened at 4 PM, looking like exhaustion personified.

"Buster! There you are." He smiled, and Maya felt it again—that swimming sensation in her chest, like she was submerged in something deeper than the murky ethics of corporate espionage. "Thank you for walking him. My wife, she—"

"I know," Maya said softly. "Cancer. The trial that failed last year."

Emery's face crumbled. "We tried everything. The side effects were too severe. We couldn't—"

"Hide it," she finished. "You couldn't hide it anymore."

He slumped against the doorframe. "Who are you? Really?"

Maya looked at Buster, sitting attentively at her feet, innocent and unaware that his morning walks were destroying a man's life's work. She thought about the swimming pool she'd passed on her way here, the way the water had looked so peaceful, so clean.

"Nobody," she said, unclipping Buster's collar and handing it back. "Just a dog walker who lost her dog."

She walked away, evidence untouched on her phone. Behind her, she heard Buster bark—a cheerful, uncomplicated sound that echoed in the space between what she was paid to do and what she could live with.
