Sweet Spot

papayaiphonepadel

Maya's thumbs hovered over her **iPhone**, the blue bubble of her group chat pulsing like a heartbeat. "U coming to the courts?" "Everyone's gonna be there." "Party at Jake's after."

She groaned into her pillow. Two weeks into freshman year and already the social currents were pulling her under. Padel camp — whatever that was — apparently determined your social destiny for the semester. Her older sister had warned her: "High school's just middle school with better hair and worse anxiety."

Her mom appeared in the doorway, holding a Tupperware container. "Papaya for breakfast! I cut it fresh — your dad swore it helped his backhand back in college."

"Mom, nobody eats papaya. It looks like alien insides."

"It's exotic! Sophisticated! Now eat up and don't forget your water bottle."

The courts smelled like expensive rubber and teenage insecurity. Maya clutched her rented racquet like a shield. Everyone else had matching outfits and racquets that probably cost more than her car — if she had a car, which she definitely didn't.

"You're up, New Girl,"

Jake. The Jake. His smile was exactly as charming as advertised, which was infuriating. "Show us what you got."

Her first swing hit the ball directly into the fence. Someone giggled. Her face burned hotter than the sun.

But then — strange physics happened. Her second shot caught the wire, spun sideways, and dropped perfectly in the corner. Jake blinked. "Okay, that was actually sick."

"Total fluke," she muttered, but something shifted.

Three games later, her phone buzzed in her bag. She ignored it.

At lunch, she sat alone with her Tupperware of neon-orange fruit, feeling conspicuous and weird and proud somehow. Jake dropped onto the bench beside her.

"What is that?"

"Papaya." She lifted a forkful. "Want some? It's... acquired taste."

He took the fork, grimaced, then swallowed. "Okay, wow. That's actually not terrible."

"My dad says it's a superfood."

"Your dad sounds smart."

Her iPhone buzzed again. New message from the group chat: "Where r u?"

Maya typed back: "Found my sweet spot." Then she turned off the screen and picked up her racquet.

The real game wasn't on the court anyway.
