Sweaty Palms Secrets

palmrunningpoolspy

Maya's palms were practically sweating through her phone case. Again.

"You're literally spiraling," Chloe said, snatching the phone to examine the hundredth draft of the text to Jayden. Pool party. Saturday. Bring swimsuit. You got this.

"What if I look like a total fool in front of everyone?" Maya groaned, dramatically face-planting onto her bed. "I haven't been swimming since, like, eighth grade. What if I forgot how to swim? What if my hair looks weird wet? What if—"

"Maya. Breathe." Chloe tossed a pillow at her. "You're overthinking it. Just be chill. You've been crushing on Jayden forever. This is your moment."

Saturday arrived in a blur of anxiety and impulse bikini purchases. The neighborhood pool party was already poppin' when Maya arrived, the bass from someone's portable speaker mixing with splashes and laughter. She spotted Jayden immediately—of course she did—laughing with his friends near the deep end, his basketball shorts already soaked.

Then she saw it: Jayden and some girls huddled in a corner of the pool deck, looking at something on a phone. Maya's stomach did that familiar twisty thing it always did when she felt excluded. Were they spying on someone? Talking behind someone's back? She felt like she was back in middle school, always on the outside looking in.

"Hey!" someone shouted. "Marco!"

Maya instinctively yelled "Polo!" before realizing she'd walked right into the middle of the game. Water splashed everywhere as Jayden's friend Derrick surfaced right next to her, grinning.

"You're it!" he laughed, splashing water directly at her face.

Maya sputtered, wiping water from her eyes as the whole group cracked up. But then—she felt it. That warmth spreading through her chest that had nothing to do with embarrassment. Jayden was watching her, really watching her, with this tiny smile tugging at the corner of his mouth. Not mocking. Just... noticing.

"Maya, right?" Jayden swam over, treading water near her. "You're in my English class. You sit by the window."

"Yeah," she managed, trying to play it cool despite her racing heart. "That's me."

"Cool." He nodded like this was the most normal conversation ever. "Wanna play? We're doing teams."

Hours later, Maya sat on the pool's edge with Chloe, hair still damp, skin tingling from chlorine and fresh air and possibility. She'd spent the afternoon laughing, splashing, and actually talking to Jayden—not as some mysterious crush, but as a real person who liked dumb memes and played basketball and had an annoying little brother.

"So?" Chloe wiggled her eyebrows. "Text him yet?"

Maya pulled out her phone, her palms finally dry for the first time all day. Some things were worth sweating over. But this? This felt like it might be the start of something real.

"Yeah," she said, typing the message. "I think I will."
