Sweaty Palms & Secret Spies
Maya's palms were practically dripping as she clutched her phone under the cafeteria table. This was it—mission: **spy** on Jason's lunch table conversation without getting caught. Again.
"You're being extra," said Kiara, scrolling through TikTok. "Just go say hi."
"Absolutely not," Maya hissed, adjusting her beanie **hat** lower over her eyes. "That requires social skills I don't possess. Besides, I'm building a character. Mysterious. Unavailable."
"You mean unavailable for your own crush?" Kiara smirked.
Whatever. Maya's strategy was flawless: observe from afar, gather intelligence, eventually become his type through careful study of his interests. So what if she'd been doing this since September? So what if she accidentally memorized his order (iced caramel latte, two pumps, no whip)? That's called dedication.
Meanwhile, back at home, her actual **cat**, Luna, had zero respect for personal space. The orange tabby kept knocking over Maya's carefully curated aesthetic while her brother's **dog**, Buster, barked at literally nothing outside. How did animals have more game than her?
"Dude, he's looking this way," Kiara whispered.
Maya's heart hammered. She focused intently on her phone, casually rifling through completely unrelated apps. Smooth. So smooth.
Then—disaster. Jason actually walked over.
"Hey," he said.
Maya's brain short-circuited. "Hey."
"I like your **hat**," he continued. "Anyway, my friend group does this thing where we **spy** on the new kids to see if they're cool enough to sit with. You passed the test."
Maya blinked. "Wait—what?"
"We've been watching you all week," Jason laughed. "You're hilarious. Also, your **cat** posts are legendary. My **dog** goes crazy watching them on my screen."
Kiara lost it. Maya's life flashed before her eyes.
"So," Jason said, "wanna sit with us?"
That night, Maya read until 3 AM, her phone illuminating her **palm** as she texted Kiara: "I think this might actually be happening." Maybe being yourself wasn't the worst strategy after all. Even if yourself was just a chronically online disaster with orange cat content and zero chill.
