Sweaty Palms & Second Chances

Maya's palms were practically leaking as she stood at the edge of Jake's pool party. Three weeks into sophomore year, and she was still the girl who ate it in the cafeteria last month. The humiliation lived rent-free in her head.

"You doing okay? You look like you're about to pass out."

Maya jumped. Jake stood there, shirtless, droplets of water sliding down his chest. Her brain short-circuited.

"Yeah. Just. Hot."

Lie. Her palms were sweating because Jake Morrison—the same Jake who'd watched her faceplant into a tray of tater tots—was three feet from her.

"Wanna cool off?" He gestured at the pool.

Maya's stomach did olympic-level gymnastics. She'd been hiding her secret since seventh grade: she couldn't swim. Not "needs practice" couldn't swim. Like, actual panic in water deeper than her knees.

"I'm good."

"You sure? You look kinda..."

Nervous laughter escaped. "I forgot my vitamin gummies. My mom says they help with... stuff."

Lame. So lame.

Jake's golden retriever, Barnaby, chose that moment to crash the party, barreling out the back door with the energy of a creature who'd never met a stranger. He made a beeline for Maya, bypassing everyone else like she was covered in bacon.

"Barnaby, no—" Jake started.

The dog planted his front paws on Maya's thighs, tail thwacking her legs with hurricane force. Her palms stopped sweating. For the first time all day, she wasn't thinking about tater tots or water or how deeply uncool she was.

"He likes you," Jake said, surprised. "He usually hates everyone."

Maya scratched behind Barnaby's ears. "Guess I'm special."

"Yeah." Jake's eyes crinkled. "Yeah, you are."

Her palms weren't sweating anymore.

Sometimes the worst moments become the best ones. Sometimes a dog chooses you when you feel invisible. And sometimes—just sometimes—you realize nobody's actually watching you as hard as you're watching yourself.

"So," Jake said. "Wanna help me with Barnaby? He needs a bath."

Maya grinned. "Only if you don't make me swim."

Jake laughed. "Deal."

Barnaby leaned into her like he'd known her forever. Maya knew, with sudden certainty, that this was the start of something real.
