Sweaty Palms & Screens

Maya's palms were practically dripping onto her padel racquet. Three weeks of practicing in her backyard, watching endless YouTube tutorials, and here she was—about to make a complete fool of herself in front of the entire sophomore class.

"You got this, May," Liam said, flashing that crooked grin that made her stomach do backflips. His phone sat on the bench, face down. No distractions. Just the game.

The competitive padel league had been his idea. Somehow, in the span of a PE period, Maya had agreed to partner with her crush for a tournament that half the school would be watching. Her palms slicker with every thought.

First point: she shanked it into the net.

Second point: Liam covered for her with a diving save that should've been illegal.

By the third game, something clicked. The glass walls echoed with every hit, the rubber ball bouncing like her pulse. Maya stopped overthinking and just moved—left, right, forward—her racquet becoming an extension of her arm. They were actually winning.

Then her iPhone buzzed in her bag. One buzz, then another. A collective vibration from the sidelines as multiple phones lit up simultaneously. Someone had posted something. Something about them.

Maya's palms went from sweaty to ice cold.

Between games, she checked. A photo of them mid-game—Liam's arm around her waist, both laughing, something electric in the frame. Caption: "Practice or practice? 😏" The comments were already flooding in. TEA SPILLED. OMG. COUPLE ALERT.

She handed Liam her phone, hands shaking. "Everyone thinks—"

"I know," he said, not looking at the screen. "I liked it before I even hit post."

The buzzer rang. Next game. Maya's palms weren't sweating anymore. They were steady, solid, ready.

Some losses are actually wins. And sometimes, the most nerve-wracking moments are exactly where you're supposed to be.
