Sweaty Palms & Pool Parties
Maya's palms were sweating so hard she could practically water plants with them. Standing at the edge of Jake's pool party, she watched everyone else living their best lives while she mentally recited every excuse to leave. Her phone buzzed — her mom's daily reminder to take her vitamin D gummy. Like that was gonna help her social anxiety.
"Hey, you gonna swim or just stand there looking like you're solving calculus?" Jake appeared beside her, dripping wet and annoyingly confident. Maya had been crushing on him since seventh grade, which was exactly why she'd been avoiding him all summer.
"I'm good," she lied, clutching her towel like a lifeline. "Just... enjoying the ambiance."
"Come on, Maya." Jake rolled his eyes. "It's a pool, not a shark tank."
Before she could answer, her nemesis Bella emerged from the water like a professional influencer. "Omg Maya, are you seriously still dry? The water's literally perfect."
Maya's brain short-circuited. She could either keep being the weirdo on the sidelines or actually participate in her own life.
"Fine," she said, dropping her towel and diving in before she could overthink it. The water shocked her system — cold, refreshing, totally normal.
She surfaced to Jake grinning. "See? Was that so hard?"
"Actually," someone said from behind them, "that was a solid 7/10 dive. Points deducted for the excessive splashage."
They all turned to see some guy in a bear mascot head sitting on a pool floatie, casually sipping a Capri Sun.
"WHAT," Maya said.
"My cousin works at the amusement park," Jake explained like this explained everything. "That's Kevin. He refuses to take the head off. It's a whole thing."
"The bear must stay," Kevin said solemnly. "It is who I am now."
Maya laughed so hard she accidentally snorted water up her nose, but somehow she didn't even care. Her palms weren't sweaty anymore. Sometimes the most embarrassing moments were the ones that made you feel actually alive for the first time.
