Sweaty Palms & Padel Courts
Maya's palms were sweating. Again. She wiped them on her tennis skirt—third time in five minutes—and tried to look like she belonged at the Sunset Beach Club, where everyone's parents drove luxury cars and nobody's summer job involved folding towels at the community pool.
"You're up, Maya!" Josh called from the other side of the padel court. He was beautiful in that effortless way popular guys always were, like he'd just rolled out of bed looking perfect. His paddle rested against his shoulder like he'd been born holding it.
Maya stepped onto the court, heart doing that thing where it felt like it was running a marathon against her ribs. She'd never played padel before—barely even knew what it was until Chloe, her summer best friend, had dragged her here to "expand her social circle." Whatever that meant.
The ball came at her, and she swung, missed entirely, and nearly tripped over her own feet. Chloe's friend group laughed—not meanly, but still. Maya felt her face burn.
"It's okay!" Josh said, jogging over. "Here, let me help you with your grip."
He reached for her hands, and Maya practically stopped breathing. Because her palms were absolutely drenched. She couldn't let him touch them—that would be social suicide. She pulled away quickly. "I'm good! Just... nerves."
"You're running too much," Chloe said from the sidelines, where she sat beneath a massive palm tree that looked like it belonged in a movie. "Stop overthinking everything. That's your problem."
Maya blinked. "What?"
"You're always running from yourself," Chloe continued, like this was obvious. "Always pretending you're someone you're not. Just own it—you're new at this. So what?"
Something in Maya's chest loosened. She looked at Josh, who was still watching her with those annoyingly perfect eyes. "Yeah," she said, surprising herself. "I've never played. This is literally my first time."
Josh grinned. "Finally. Let me show you how to actually hit that thing."
He spent the next hour teaching her, and Maya discovered she was actually kind of good at padel. Her palms still sweated when Josh high-fived her after her first successful shot, but for the first time all summer, she didn't wipe them on her skirt.
